What is Pycnogenol?
Pycnogenol is the registered trademark name for French maritime pine bark extract, created by Horphag Research Inc. In the 1960s, Horphag’s chairman, Charles Haimoff initiated the concept of what is today, Pycnogenol. He developed a water-soluble flavonoid extracted from the bark of the French maritime pine. Over 40 years, Horphag has invested extensively in the research of this premium ingredient.
Pinus pinaster, the maritime pine, is a pine tree native to the Mediterranean region. It reaches approximately 20-35 meters tall with thick, red bark. Pycnogenol is derived from the bark of this bountiful pine tree and utilized in supplement form. This extract is notorious for being a powerful source of polyphenolic procyanidins.
